Spring is finally here and there is plenty to do in the polytunnel. It may have been a late start this year but the growing season is finally upon us and many polytunnel gardeners will be sowing and growing over the Easter period. If you have some time off work this Easter, you may be looking for ways to improve your polytunnel. Here are a few projects to take on in your polytunnel this Easter holiday:
Before the growth of polytunnel plants really takes off, this could be a good time to consider measures which will allow you to grow more and achieve a greater yield in your polytunnel. Vertical gardening techniques will help you to make the most of the space in your polytunnel. A trellis for climbing plants, attached to the crop bars, can allow you to grow a wider range of vining plants such as cucumbers or squash. Create a simple wooden frame covered with mesh or wire this Easter, and get it in place while you have some time and before growth really takes off.
Another simple job for the Easter break is to make sure you have adequate staging to place all your seedlings and growing plants. A simple wooden or wood frame and mesh or wire shelf hung from the crop bars can help to make sure you have the space you need as you pot up and harden off plants prior to planting elsewhere in your garden or in your polytunnel.
As the weather warms, it should not be all about hard work. It is important to take time to enjoy your polytunnel garden. One of the best ways to do so is to create a wonderful seating area in your polytunnel which you can enjoy when the sun is shining and when the weather is less than ideal. Creating a seating area can be as simple as stringing a hammock from your crop bars, or can be far more involved – for example, you could create a sumptuous seating area using old wooden pallets, or other reclaimed materials. Make it your mission this Easter holiday to make sure you have a seating area in your polytunnel that will make you feel happy and relaxed.
