The poly tunnel is of high quality. Plenty of excellent instructions & information. The downside was the delivery. I requested advance notification of delivery which was not done. Also that I was contacted an hour ahead to enable myself to get to site, this did not happen either. The lorry got stuck in our field & I had to pay £30– to get my neighbour to tow him out. Hence a very churned up unsightly field.

Loved the website as you can order the size and the extras as you go along. The final price is calculated so you can amend your order to suit your budget. Polytunnel went up easy with the help of instructions and videos. We ordered ours Autumn last year, so it is now ready for sowing and growing this Spring.

Straightforward assembly with plenty of support through on-line videos. Fitted together easily and cover was easy to attach too. Maybe more antihotspot tape for ridge bars would have been beneficial as the cover touches these bars. Need to buy extra. Survived gale force winds already so all looking good.

Yep, four stars again - just falling short of five because I'm gonna be picky. I spent the best part of a thousand quid so I'm gonna be. And it's not the polytunnel - which is great - it's the packaging. Why, in todays world is everything wrapped in plastic, and then more plastic, and then even more plastic !! All the parts fit together well and so far it's going together as planned - the instructions are easy to follow and the links back to the website for quick how-to videos are great - very useful. I haven't finished assembling yet, just the cover to go on but I'm compelled to write this as I've just got annoyed by the incredible over use of plastic - each pack of screws / brackets is in a plastic bag often inside another plastic bag, and sometimes, inside another! Totally unnecessary. If the idea is to have these items separated for easy handling / stock control / packing lists or whatever - surely use a cardboard box for each. Probably costs a bit more but at what cost to the environment if we keep using plastic ? The plastic bags have no recycling information ( the 1 - 7 numbering system to tell you what they are made from ) so I've no choice but to landfill them. On top of that - the timber and aluminium parts have been shrink wrapped in some sort of hideous black plastic cling film - again I have no idea why as they were fastened together inside this wrapping with plastic tape. The wrapping can't have been to protect from moisture as it did the opposite - trapping moisture inside and keeping the timber parts wet - so if you get your timber parts get this stuff off them immediately and let the timber dry out. It's pressure treated but still you don't want to leave it soaking in water which is what this stuff is doing. It's difficult to remove and has no protective properties against knocks as it's so wafer thin so I'm puzzled as to why it's used. I'm ranting about this because plastic is so bad for the environment and the whole idea of getting a polytunnel is to grow our own food and hopefully reduce our carbon and packaging footprint - yes it's a polythene cover but it is recyclable so perhaps some further thought needs to go into how the items are packaged given the ethos of grow your own etc etc.... The self drive screws are a bit tricky - I'd definitely drill the holes for those first which makes it much easier. A small socket is supplied for your combi drill for those so that's good. Finding a tea bag in the instructions was a nice touch and the booklets included with growing tips and advice are great along with the calendar all very nicely presented. It really is a great product and pretty easy to assemble with basic diy skills, just a shame it's wrapped in so much plastic. So four stars, I would definitely recommend First Tunnels products - I think they've made a great polytunnel kit , I hope they take on board these comments for future packing of items.

Overall an very good experience and a quality product. Pre-purchase advice excellent. Ordering hassle free Delivery spot on. Parts list - extensive and relatively easy to understand. Instruction manual - Mostly very clear and easy to understand. There are a few minor errors but always possible to work it out (sometimes with a call to support) Telephone construction helpline - I had to call 3 times and always got a quick response that answered my questions. Parts - all metalwork and timber was good quality. The major fittings were all good. A few of the nails, nuts and bolts were off perfect but only minor niggle. Construction - Quite straightforward but don't ask me how long it took. Do not underestimate how long it takes to think about each process if this is your first tunnel. Not a project for a long weekend unless you are fit and strong. Other - the books that came in the kit are surprisingly helpful, well worth reading these first. Not for construction but just to work out how you will use the tunnel. Overall - comfortably 5/5 and I would recommend FirstTunnels for both product and service. Off I go to potter in my new tunnel.

Hoop Spacing

Help Me Choose

We have two options available. Our 14ft wide Polytunnel allows you to select the distance between each hoop. If your site is particularly exposed with strong prevailing winds the 5ft (1.52m) Hoop Spacing model will give you extra stability and peace of mind. However, if your Polytunnel site is in a sheltered location the 7ft (2.13m) Hoop spacing model is for you.

Select Length

Select Type Of Cover

Help Me Choose

Your first big decision when choosing a Polytunnel is almost always..."What size is ideal?". But there's other important factors to take into consideration..."What type of cover do I want?". It might not sound like something to give a lot of thought to, but the cover you choose will affect your day-to-day Polytunnel management, what and how you grow. We have 4 options to choose from...

Super Therm

Our most popular polythene cover incorporates an additive that increases its Thermic efficiency, yet still retains 90% light transmission. In simple terms the polythene helps trap and preserve higher temperatures inside the structures for much longer - in heated structures, a 15-20% fuel savings can be achieved. A beneficial side effect of this added additive is that light entering the polytunnel is diffused - scattering light evenly throughout the structure. This UV stabilised film is 200 microns (800 Gauge) and is supplied with a five year guarantee.

FOR USE WITH All crops where heat is important such as bedding/annual plants, propagation houses & over wintered vegetable production.

Properties

Supplier

Our polythene is exclusively sourced from Sotrafa in Spain, the world's biggest producer of horticultural film with an enviable reputation for quality thanks to exhaustive testing in the demanding weather conditions of Almeria.

First Tunnels are the sole distributor of Sotrafa products in the UK, and we are proud to work with the global leader to deliver the best possible products for our customers. UK suppliers make cheaper alternatives, but the quality simply doesn't compare.

Warranty

Although guaranteed for 7 years against its biggest threat of sunlight degradation, when fitted correctly, it is not uncommon to hear our polythene covers have lasted in excess of 10 years.

Polythene Guarantee
UV Filters
Solar Radiation

Sunlight is the biggest enemy of polythene. While it's essential for the wellbeing of whatever you're growing, it also 'kills' polythene in much the same way you can find old discarded crisp packets lose their colour and become very brittle. First Tunnels polythene covers are developed and tested in the extreme conditions to give optimum performance and are UV stabilised to prevent the polythene from breaking down prematurely.

What is a KLy?

A Kilo-Langley is the measure of Solar energy radiated in 1 year. It varies from a minimum of 60 KLy in the Polar regions to 120 KLy in warm regions, and to a maximum of 200 KLy in the African desert. Southern Spain receives about 140 KLy whereas the UK receives about half of that, just 78KLy.

Thickness
Thickness

Our Super Therm polythene is 800 gauge/200 micron and made up of 3 layers for outstanding strength and performance.

We use a 3 layer polythene made of exceptional quality material, which has a hugely beneficial thermal effect.

The common misconception about polythene is the more layers, the better the product. Unfortunately this isn't true. More layers simply hide poor quality films, which are sandwiched inside a very average inner and outer skin. The result of these multi-layer (often called 5 or 6 layer) films is a noticeably poorer all-round performance - the thermal effect is significantly decreased.

Super Therm = 5

Dart Test

Dart Test
A test to measure the impact strength on a test piece of plastic, using a weighted falling 'dart'.
Super Therm = 450

Smart White

This specialist film reduces light transmission to 65%, and ultimately the temperature inside the structure. This film is most useful where sun scorch is a problem for growers. It is also suitable for animal husbandry applications and other stock and storage houses where a great build up of heat is not ideal. This UV stabilised film is 180 microns (720 Gauge) and is supplied with a five year guarantee.

FOR USE WITH Animal Husbandry structures and those plants that would normally grow under a shade canopy.
